I know this is a basketball blog but...

Believe me, I have some thoughts on NBA free agency and the Las Vegas summer league, but since I just finished watching the National League lose for the 13th consecutive season in the MLB All Star Game in St Louis (looks like the Dodgers will just have to win the World Series without homefield), the first real post of this "basketball" blog is going to be about baseball. Go figure.

Barack Obama, who I just learned is the 44th president of the United States, threw out the first pitch before tonight's game. Presidents have done this with regularity in the past, but I'm not sure a Chief of State has ever rocked the windbreaker of his favorite team. After trotting out to the mound in his White Sox gear, Obama delivered an awkward, southpaw pitch to to his honorary catcher Albert "guilty until proven innocent" Pujols, who scooped the low pitch out of the dirt. There have been much worse efforts , but as an accomplished athlete who has played pickup with the national champion North Carolina Tarheels, I expected better.

Finally, watching any big game on FOX means one unfortunate thing for any baseball fan...you have to sit through 9 innings of Tim McCarver. For those who have listened to this guy broadcast a game, you know exactly what I am talking about. He's one of those guys who tries to sound articulate but in the process places about 4 or 5 words in the wrong order while talking in a weird southernish? accent. Tim knows a thing or two about baseball...I'll give him that much. But listening to him for 3 minutes, let alone 9 innings, is a doozie.

In honor of the Midsummer Classic, I'll leave you with some classic baseball footage of a movie I've watched at least 75 times...no joke...I dare you not to cry.

  1. In case any of you actually care...just to be accurate, I was wrong in saying the national league has lost the last 13 all-star games. What I should've said is they haven't won in 13 years...I forgot the infamous tie in the 2002 game in milwaukee
